Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Ruth was a small child when her father, who was an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she quit school after just two years in order to pursue an acting career. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties such as in New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Her next job was as the "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. Earned money working during the day working as an Usherette. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
